Spring Leadership Conference a Success

The spring leadership conference was a huge success! With a large turnout, thanks to our dedicated local chapter members, it was a pretty packed day. After respecting FBLA tradition, with the ceremonial creed and opening, we proceeded on to campaigns. It was a heated race this year, and after a close election, we bid a warm farewell and thanks to our outgoing State President, Joe Musi, and welcome to our new State President, Naren Inukoti! Chris Van Winkle will be serving as secretary this year, and Bryan Scordino will be taking over Vice Presidency. After speeches, a fine presentation was put on by Men’s Wearhouse that gave solid insight into how to “dress for success”. Don’t forget, bring your FBLA membership card with you to any Men’s Wearhouse to receive 50% off! We also had an exciting seminar put together by Ryan Paul, a former FBLA national president, on FBLA and leadership skills. Finally, at the end of the day after some networking, we said our good byes and parted ways… until next time of course! Here’s the FBLA State Board looking forward to our next gathering! Cheers!

Newton North Performs Community Service Projects

In an effort to serve the local community and learn about business, the Newton North FBLA Club has already completed two main projects: a citywide holiday food drive and a holiday gift drive. A large aspect of business is learning how to communicate effectively and working with a team, so the club wanted to do an event that would help develop these skills. Because Thanksgiving was near, the club wanted to reach out and help people in need of food through a collaboration with the Greater Boston Food Bank. FBLA started out by contacting grocery stores in Newton and gaining their permission to set up donation tables outside their stores.

Next, FBLA advertised by posting articles in various city newspapers and distributed four hundred flyers around town. Finally, on the day of the event, November 12, 2011, club members worked in shifts to man the donation stands. The club was able to collect over nine hundred packaged and canned goods and over $500 in cash donations. Total proceeds of over $3,000 were donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank and the Newton Food Pantry.

The next project was the Holiday Gift Drive, co-sponsored by the Newton Village Bank. The gift drive is a tradition that the bank has been running for the past few years to help over 250 families in Newton who are in need of gifts on Christmas. The Newton North FBLA was able to collect over eighty gifts and $100 in gift cards to donate to the Village Bank.

FBLA at Newton North High School meets at least once a week, usually Mondays afterschool. Currently, the club has around fifteen regular members. There is strong senior leadership as well as a large number of capable underclassmen.

In the future, the club wishes to take on bigger projects and have an even bigger impact on the community. "We want FBLA to be an easily recognizable name in Newton," said club president Kevin Wu. We would also like to integrate some more core business concepts and financial knowledge into our events.
